While a war in Vietnam raged on, space travel was no longer science fiction, the first human heart transplant was performed in Africa, and the Beach Boys sang to Good Vibrations, South Georgia Banking Company was born. A local group of businessmen in Omega, Ga. took measures to convert the Citizens Service Bank, a regulated certificated bank, to a state chartered bank; applied for FDIC insurance and on April 15, 1970 the state bank charter was granted and the name was changed to South Georgia Banking Company. By mid-year deposits were insured through the FDIC. The bank operated at the Omega location until 1976 when a Tifton branch was opened at Fourth Street and Tift Ave. This building still serves as one of our branch offices.

In 1987, with deposit growth and an increasing customer base, the bank opened a second Tifton Office at 725 W. 2nd St. which now serves as the bank’s main office. Then in 2000 following changes in regulations to allow branching across county lines, we opened an office in Moultrie, Georgia on the east bypass. The latest branch office opened in July 2004 on Tift Avenue North of 20th Street in the heart of Tifton’s fastest growing section. The most significant expansion plans were realized with the acquisition of Community National Bank in 2006 with offices in Ashburn and Cordele Georgia. Following this addition to expand our customer service area, we now operate in four counties with eight locations.

Each of our locations strives to achieve our mission by providing service beyond expectations, and the future looks bright with further expansion plans already in place. The words of our 70’s original theme song still ring true today, “we take your banking personally”.
